David Whitehead

David A. Whitehead has served as a Hartford HealthCare Senior Vice President and President and Chief Executive Officer of the East Region, which includes Backus Hospital, Windham Hospital and a growing number of outpatient and ambulatory centers throughout Eastern Connecticut, since 2013.

A leading healthcare executive for many years, he has successfully balanced strategy, finances, rapid-cycle change and the need to put patients first – always. His current role involves creating a high-quality, integrated, accessible health network for communities in Eastern Connecticut.

Prior to his current position with Hartford HealthCare, an integrated healthcare system with more than 18,000 employees, Whitehead was Backus Hospital’s President and Chief Executive Officer since 2009. 

A Norwich resident who was born at Backus, he joined the hospital in 1999 as Vice President for Corporate Communications. In 2003, he was named Vice President for Planning.

Prior to his healthcare career, Whitehead was the President and Publisher of the Norwich Bulletin, and he served as an executive in Gannett Co., Inc., the nation’s largest newspaper publishing company.

He has been very involved with a wide variety of community organizations, and currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Norwich Free Academy, a regional independent high school. He has held leadership positions on the boards of the United Way, Three Rivers Community College, Hospice Southeastern Connecticut and he served as chairman of the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut. He was named the Eastern Connecticut Citizen of the Year in 2003.

He earned his Bachelor of Science degree at Eastern Connecticut State University, and he holds a Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration and a Master of Science in Labor Relations, both from the University of New Haven.

Whitehead resides in Norwich with his wife, Tara. The couple has five children: Meghan (and spouse Robert), Timothy, Caitlyn, Neil and Anne.
