SECRETARY OF STATE DENISE MERRILL HONORED BY WINDHAM HOSPITAL
Denise Merrill, Connecticut’s newly-elected Secretary of State, was honored during the meeting of the Windham Hospital Board of Directors on Monday, May 23rd. In presenting the award, Dick Brvenik, President and CEO, of Windham Hospital, commented, “We have known Denise to be a passionate advocate for healthcare, education, economic growth for our region, and fair and open government. While we will miss her leadership in our State Legislature, we know that Connecticut’s executive branch will benefit greatly from her talents and dedication and we certainly wish her well.”
Merrill served as State Representative from the 54th General Assembly district for 17 years, representing the towns of Mansfield and Chaplin (the district which includes Windham Hospital). First elected to the General Assembly in 1994, she rose to the rank of House Majority leader from 2008-2010 and served as the House chair of the budget writing Appropriations Committee from 2005-2008, as Vice Chair of the committees on Education from 1994-98 and Government Administration and Elections from 1994-96. Merrill also served on the Commerce and Banking committees during her legislative tenure. In 2009, Denise Merrill was named by her colleagues in the legislature as “Most Respected by the Other Side of the Aisle” and “Most Effective Legislator” in a poll done by Connecticut Magazine.
