Gina Barreca Hosts Writing Workshop to Benefit Women’s Health Services
at Windham Hospital
Gina Barreca, professor, writer and humorist, will host a workshop on creative writing and humor on Saturday, March 24, 2012 from 1:30 to 5 pm in the Education Center at Windham Hospital. Proceeds from the event will benefit Gina’s Friends, a fund at the Windham Hospital Foundation that helps women obtain the healthcare services they need.
"Every workshop encourages writers to say 'Here I am.' The best workshops will help writers say 'Here we are.' The sense of community forged by a short, intensive working party of writers can make a remarkable difference in the level of commitment, energy, creativity, and originality you bring to the page. In 'Writing Light' we'll be looking at writing in general, but also focusing on how humor can bring light even to the most serious subjects," offered Barreca.
Each year, Barreca uses her talents to raise funds for women in need. Gina’s Friends was formed in 2010 when Gina and her husband, Michael Meyer made a major gift to the Windham Hospital to start the fund that bears her name. Their positive experiences at Windham Hospital and their generosity made this fund possible, helping women to obtain mammograms, ultrasounds and other diagnostic tests, even if they are unable to pay for those services. More than 100 women have been helped by Gina’s Friends since its inception.
The workshop will feature Barreca as a teacher, mentor and coach, but be prepared to laugh. Her goal is to help women find their writing voice, while building a personal and professional network of friends. The workshop will conclude with a wine and cheese reception.
