Med-East Celebrates 20th Anniversary

WILLIMANTIC, CT, May 5, 2009– A gathering of staff and friends of Med-East Medical Walk-In Center kicked-off a week of celebration for their 20 years of service to the Windham Community. On May 8, 1989, through the initiative of four local physicians: Michael Kilgannon, MD, Stephen Leach, MD, Edward Sawicki, MD and Michael Shore, MD, Med-East became a resource for individuals and families without a primary care physician or in need of flu shots, immunizations, physical examinations and occupational health services. First Selectman Jean DeSmet read a proclamation to the group declaring May 5, 2009 Med-East Medical Walk-In Center Day in Windham in recognition of the excellent health care services provided to our community over the past twenty (20) years. She noted that over 13,000 patients are seen each year providing urgent care services for 65 hours each week, including extended evening hours and weekends, when many physicians may not be available. She also recognized the highly-trained and caring medical professionals who offer prompt care to thousands of patients each year.

Michael Kilgannon, MD, spoke on behalf of the physician owners in partnership with Windham Hospital since 2002. He acknowledged the first Manager of the Clinic, Judy Miller and the current Manager, Marie Hakmiller, and also noted that Med-East Medical Walk-In Center opened a second location in Tolland, Connecticut in July 2004 to serve the northern tier of the Hospital’s service area.

Med-East will be serving birthday cake all day on Friday, May 8th in their Willimantic location at 1703 West Main Street. For more information about Med-East call 456.1252 or visit their website www.medeast.com.
