Pain Management Services

Highly qualified staff, compassionate care

According to the American Academy of Pain Management is:

The systematic study of clinical and basic science and application for the reduction of pain and suffering;

The blending of tools, techniques, and principles taken from the discrete healing art disciplines and reformulated as a holistic application for the reduction of pain and suffering; and

A newly emerging discipline emphasizing an interdisciplinary approach with a goal of reduction of pain and suffering.

“Reduction of pain and suffering” seems to dominate the definition of pain management. But what does that really mean? To the person suffering from constant head-aches, from chronic back pain that keeps them from functioning normally or from pain caused by cancer that continually brings that condition to the forefront of consciousness, it means a break from something that can take control of all life and activity. Pain is a growing problem for physicians and patients. When inadequately treated, pain can lead to depression, loss of function, increased time to heal and lost workdays. Unfortunately, 80% of patients surveyed thought that their pain was a normal part of their medical condition, and something that must be endured—it was seen as inevitable.

Pain Management is not an entity all by itself, but is an integral component of a patient’s entire healing or maintenance process. A patient’s referring physician continues to “stay in the loop” during the pain management process. This enhances continuity of care between specialists and referring physicians.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q How do I get an appointment at Pain Management Services?
A At Windham Hospital, patients are referred by their physicians to the pain management program. The referring physician may be your primary caregiver or a referring specialist, such as your orthopedist or oncologist.

Q Will my insurance pay for these appointments?
A We work with most major insurance companies, and help you determine whether your insurance will cover the cost of Pain Management. Medicare does cover our services. Many Workers’ Compensation companies will refer patients to us via their attending physicians. If you are uninsured, or underinsured, our staff is available to assist you with payment options.

Q Should I leave a message on the answering machine at Pain Management Services if I have a question?
A Yes, most definitely! Due to the large volume of calls that are received each day, leaving a message on the answering machine is a good way to ensure that you will receive a return phone call.

“Many patients do not realize that there are things they can do to alleviate pain. Taking back control of life is a reality when pain management is used as part of a holistic approach to healing.”
