Windham Hospital Produces an Extraordinary Year ofQuality Care Achievements & Financial Gains

A team of hundreds of professionals dedicated to quality patient care and service excellence propelled Windham Hospital to significant achievements in all of its five areas of concentration: quality, service, people, finance and growth. Windham Hospital officials reported these extraordinary results at its 76th Annual Board of Corporators meeting on January 14.

“It is the focus and diligence of a committed staff that has produced another successful year at Windham Hospital, said Chairman of the Board, Arthur W. Brodeur. “The quality of care at this community hospital is exceptional.”

The hospital leadership expanded this year upon its commitment to excellence in five key areas that place equal emphasis in each area of hospital operation. The focus has been on quality care improvements and service excellence, investing in and retaining highly qualified staff, and responsible stewardship of finances, while growing services and programs important to the Windham community.

“We are extremely proud of these achievements made in all our areas of focus while maintaining the Hospitals position as one of the lowest cost providers in the state,” said Dick Brvenik, President & CEO. “There were several outstanding results related to clinical quality reflected in the federally reported core measures.”

The hospital realized growth in ambulatory surgeries, diagnostic imaging studies and endoscopic procedures, as well as patient use of the Emergency Department. More than 31,000 people turned to Windham Hospital for their emergency care this year. During its busiest year ever the Emergency Department was rated by its patients as one of the best in Connecticut and in the top three percent in the nation.

The Windham Hospital affiliation with Hartford Healthcare, Connecticut’s premiere healthcare delivery system, was formalized in February 2009, contributing to cost savings throughout the year in the areas of professional liability insurance, interest expense, and equipment and supplies, among others.

This is the fifth consecutive year that Windham Hospital posted a gain from operations despite reduced inpatient volume reflecting the economy and an overall industry decline. In 2009, the hospital produced operating income of more than $730,000. When consolidated with the Windham Hospital Foundation, Inc., the operating income totaled slightly over $605,000. Additionally, operating cash increased 23 percent, from $2.8 million to $3.4 million.
